I love it. So very real and honest and so true. We can all admit that we need to do better, especially as black women, with embracing our natural beauty…the real deal pretty that comes from within. AND, we need to do a better job of embracing it in each other. I know I’ve been guilty all the way around.

Is this a non-fictional piece or was it inspired by the ‘Souls of Black Girls’? Nevertheless, it was great. A bit different from your other pieces. I am usually able to imagine you reading your poems in that spoken word artist type of tone, but that was difficult to do with this one. This was more of a short story to me. Are we venturing into other writing avenues? Why do you think that you were able to overcome the constant bombardment of hints of beauty inadequacy? Parents? The men in your life? Teachers? I think you’re beautiful…
